The Clinical Documentation Improvement Supervisor/Manager will review and analyze health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for distinct patient encounters.  The CDI Supervisor/Manager will identify potential DRG (diagnosis related groups) assignment based on documentation and clinical indicators to improve the quality of documentation ensuring compliance with State and Federal regulations.  The data obtained from health record review and analysis will be utilized for reimbursement purposes, in the assessment of clinical care, and to support the ongoing education of the health care team, including physicians, allied health professionals, nursing, and case management.  The CDI Supervisor/Manager facilitates and obtains physician documentation for any clinical conditions or procedures to support the appropriate severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, and complexity of care of the patient. The CDI Supervisor/Manager supports timely, accurate, and complete documentation of clinical information used for measuring and reporting physician and facility outcomes. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Review and analysis of health records to identify relevant diagnoses; assist team members with training and identification
  • Manage a team of CDI Specialists within the department to ensure production
  • Report to leadership on progress and team performance
  • Establish best practices and implement change to improve operations, as needed
  • Able to collaborate extensively with physicians, nurses, other care givers, and medical records coding staff to improve quality and completeness of documentation of care provided and coded.  Queries physicians to clarify ambiguous, conflicting, or incomplete documentation.
  • Provides direction for concurrent modification to clinical documentation to ensure appropriate coding for reimbursement for clinical severity and services provided to patients with a DRG-based payer (Medicare/Medicaid).
  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation of clinical information used to measure and report physician and facility outcomes.
  • Provides ongoing education to all members of the patient care team.
  • Facilitates modifications to clinical documentation to ensure that the medical record presents an accurate patient clinical picture and intent of the provider.
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of clinical information used for measuring and reporting physician and hospital outcomes.
  • Conducts concurrent review of the medical records to increase the accuracy, clarity and specificity of provider documentation.


Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree required, Registered Nurse License preferred but not required
  • 3-5 years CDI experience in a hospital with an understanding of ICD-9/ICD-10 coding
  • +3 years of Management level experience in the CDI department
  • Credentialed in CDI is ideal
  • This opportunity is Managing a team and could require onsite time from Monday - Friday or Monday - Thursday.
  • This is an interim role working within a consulting team, dual reporting will exist in the matter of updates.
